The government of Taiwan through their National Youth Commission runs a competition called the Youth Trekkers Wanted Campaign. The basic requirements are for one to be between the ages of 18-30 and the application is to write a travel itinerary of what one would do if they won a trip to Taiwan. The winners gets a fully paid trip to Taiwan to fulfill their itinerary. When a friend from Taiwan told me about it,I had to apply even though I could not pinpoint where Taiwan is located on the world map.
I applied in 2011 and didn’t get it.Then I applied again in 2012 and God is good,I was declared as one of the winners of the 5th Youth Trekkers Campaign. I thus became the First African and thus First Kenyan to have won this competition. I was elated, over the moon, excited and the fact that I was on crutches would not deter me from traveling there.
Taiwan has no Embassy in Kenya, yet I needed a Visa to travel. There was the option of traveling to Hong Kong and hopefully applying for a Visa there, but I still get anxious, I would only leave if I had my Visa stamped on my passport. Can you imagine if I traveled all the way only to be denied entry?
I have to give a big thanks to Taiwan Trade Center in Kenya and specifically Richard Wu-Director and Rosaline Ireri- Trade Officer. These two went out of their call of duty to assist me.I will forever be grateful to you two.Though they aren’t a consular but a Trade Center, when I approached them with many emails and calls, they willingly accepted to assist me. With their assistance, we sent my documents to the Taiwan Embassy in South Africa via DHL and a few days later, I had my Visa.Thank you Taiwan for an awesome one month and the National Youth Commission for running this campaign.
Therefore,if you are between the ages of 18-30 keep a look out on their site http://youthtravel.tw/youthtrekker for the next round of the campaign and apply. You could be the next winner.
